New to boating and down to 2 choices
a. 1991 Ranger w/Johnson 175 boat and motor are in showroom condition excellent records, one owner and obvious is a very detail oriented person
OR
b. 2000 Skeeter w/ 150 Yamaha been fished run hard tournament fisher man, no major flaws but has been used a good deal. Young owner added oil and fuel and ran it.

I am most concerned about the motor if boat was only question the choice of the Ranger would be obvious because of pristine condition.

All comments appreciated.

Re: Motor Choice

If i had to choose between boat and motor with regular Tender Loving Care or Total Lack of Care , my choice would be the ranger...both are good out of the box...but just something to be said about a well cared for craft in showroom condition...to be safe though i would do due diligence on any boat you choose, no matter what the outward appearance...

Re: Motor Choice

You can ruin a motor pretty fast, so if you think the Yamaha has possibly been mistreated vs. the Johnson maintained well...I'd certainly go for the Johnson even though it is much older.

Like DEIFan suggests, which ever way you go a pre-purchase inspection would be prudent. Most notably ensure that you have good compression on all cylinders. Any marine will do a pre-purchase inspection of the motor for you. I had one done about 6-7 years ago and it cost about $150. Was worth it for peace of mind.

Good luck!
