shift linkage access '91 Johnson 115

I have a 1991 Johnson 115 and am currently replacing the water pump (1st time for me with this engine), I have the manual and have located the bolt that connects the lower unit shift rod to the shifter linkage ( under the lower carb). I must be missing something because it looks like a bear to get at. The manual says to remove the starter but that quite doesn't seem to help much. I've read a bunch of posts that all seem to say the same thing, just dissconnect the linkage bolt, no trouble. It looks like to me that the carbs need to be dropped to gain access. Seems like too much work..what do you think....<br />seb

Yep, some of them are a bear to get to. And its harder to hook them back up than to disconnect them. If you have a 2 piece cowling pan then take it off. If not then do what you have to do if that includes dropping the lower carb then do it. I have done that on at least one V6

I use a 1/4" drive wobbler 3/8" socket on the end of a long extension. Get a set of spring loaded steel fingers to put the bolt back in. You can find these at Sear's.

The more I look at it the more taking the carbs off seems to be needed, \Thanks for your input, at least I feel I'm on the right track...Those steel flex fingers are a god-send , they saved my bacon more than once..everyone should have some...<br />Thanks again guys..<br />Seb

Yep, every tool box should have mechanical fingers, extendable magnet, and extralong needlenose. Plus baling wire, tie-wraps and duck tape.
