50hp starts but cuts off

i recenty got a 50hp it ran when we bought it but now we can start it then it cuts out and wont start again is because we are flooding it or does it need to be connected to the battery all the time as we havent any proper battery connections yet and someone has to hold the connections on to start it

Hmm....a little more info is needed, I think. What is the model number here? Lots of 50hp models out there, and they're very different, depending on model and year.<br /><br />With that info, the folks on this board will be able to give you some assistance. In the meantime, while you're looking on the transom mount plate for the model number, add some nice connectors for your battery cables so you won't have to have someone hold wires on the battery.

can anyone tell me if my 30hp johnson year 1988 is easy to fix as i think the impeller jet is blocked and when i tried selling it yesterday it put the buyer off ,i dont blame him realy but it worked the other day or could it be the water was not deep enough even though it was covering the vents

yes it is and the water was above the vents and the hydrofoil ridge

Need more water. Try a garbage can. Fill it up.

hopefully we got somewhere today took the lower unit off and the impeller is intact and the gasket was a bit perised i think the water pipe is blocked so i will unblock it tomoz managed to fit the other engine aswell and got myself abigger water barrel at scra yard .anyone know whats best to clean off the gunk and cruststations inside the housings could i use a bleach of somesort

Most household cleaners or degreasers will take the black stuff off.

ust been down to the boat shop and he said the same he also adviced me to buy a new impeller which i did there and then because i explained what was wrong and he was on it straight away and he also said about the water depth how about that then what ahelpfull guy so thanks to iboats ive realy feel alot better so anyone out there wanting advice come to iboats and take note

a bit late to add, but here it goes.. I run my 50 horse with the lower unit off to blow out the chambers.. with the lower unit off, there is a pipe that feeds into the lower block.. a garden hose fits nicely over it (less fitting), I have a short peice for that. I run the water without running the engine and remove the pisser hose on the pan to watch any sludge.. I also run the engine just like that.. when I am all done, I put the unit back on, and test it with the muffs.. and off I go..

forgot. as far a cutting out, the battery cables do not need to be connected after it starts as it is self sustaining, just make sure the cables are apart when it is running or you will blow the rectifier.. as far as cutting out, when warm or after a few moments?, if your engine has an electric choke that feeds into the cards with two small hoses .. it might be leaking or the red lever is switch to full on.. allowing a constant supply of fuel into the engine thus flooding it big time.. move the red lever 90 degree and try again.. in the other engines with the plunger moving the butterfly choke valve.. make sure it is not locked in full choke possition.. I always close my choke for winter so no mice will go in have a good time.. (been there).. found two mice in my crankcase .. not a pretty site after trying to start it in the spring..
