Hi. Another ancient outboard. You'll find help here, for sure. Some parts are readily available, and some are hard to come by.

What parts are you looking for?

The first thing you're going to need is a workshop manual for your outboard. That's a must. Don't even begin tearing into it without one. Painful mistakes can ruin your project.

Yup. What CATransplant said.

For parts that are acceptable used, google up Twin City Outboard. I never heard of a part for an adult outboard that they couldn't come up with.

Welcome to iboats, and good luck. :)

I'd try to start it first, just so you know what you're dealing with. Use fresh, clean gas, mixed 32/1 with 2stroke oil. I'd take a look at the lower unit grease first, if you intend to run it any length of time. Make sure you pull the right screw - I think that design has a screw down there that's actually the pivot for the shift yoke, if you pull that one out, you have to pull the lower unit apart to fix it.

The lower unit has to be in the water when you run it, even for a few seconds, or you'll burn out the water pump. The lower has to be well down into the water, not just to the lower unit - midsection junction.

Assuming it starts, first you'll want to check that it's pumping water, internally. Ideally, you want to put a new impeller in it, and if not, you want to watch the temp like a hawk until you do put an impeller in it. That motor should have an overheat light on the dash, check that it's working - ask us how if your manual doesn't say. When warmed up, the block should be good and warm, but not hot - we say you can rest your fingers on it for 2-3 seconds without getting burned.

Shift it back & forth a few times, and let it fast idle in gear for a while. If the grease looked OK when you checked it earlier, it's OK to take a run around the lake for a bit, see if she heats up or runs badly under power. In either case, after you pull the boat out, recheck the lower unit lube & see if it got milky from water intrusion.

Have fun!

Re: 1960 75hp super sea horse

Changed spark plugs and got new fuel line running 50:1 Started up great. I ran mine for about a minute without water thanks to the advice of a "friend" I finally figured out the intake is underneath by the prop not on the side like he said. So the water muffs were a waste of time and money. Wishing I would have read this forum first. Mine is actually a 1961 V4SL-13 Sea Horse. So, I grow a pair and put the thing in a huge bucket of water covering the prop and the intake up past the first leaf. My lucky day....the starter bendex get jammed in the teeth of the flywheel. Got it unjammed using the nut at the top. Now I'm back to filling up the bucket and the thing won't start. Backfired once and chugs a little ..Smells like it's flooded ..lot of gas and oil in the tub. I've decided not to mess with it anymore for now till I get the repair manual and get it to the lake. Any advice in the meantime? Hopefully I haven't fried the pump.... Thanks Clip

Well, that pump was probably a goner anyhow. You should replace it after all that downtime in any case. Once you have the manual, just put a new impeller or full pump kit in it.

That it started is a good sign. It means that you'll be able to get this oldtimer going with a little work.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I can't wait to try. Got a 1960 Speed Queen by Glastex . Fifteen footer. one of the first all glas runabouts made I found out . plus the trailer for 275 bucks. The hitch cost more than that. lol. I look forward to picking brains in here..Clip
