Re: Thinking of buying a boat

The very first thing you need to be concerned with is will this be a trailer boat or will you rent a slip? Salt water or fresh water? If you do fresh water only, glass or aluminum boats are fine. If it will live in salt water you'll want a glass boat. If its a trailer boat, what do you have to tow it with. The towing capability of your vehicle will dictate how big the boat can be. How big is your family? Weight carrying capability (not # of people) for the boat you choose is the next thing to consider. That capacity by the way, includes motor, gas, gear, batteries and people. As a first timer, I'd recommend going with an outboard. When chosing the engine make sure its horsepower is at or very near the maximum rating for the boat. And if buying new, you should negotiate to get the engine of your choice, not necessarily the one the dealer is pushing. The most important thing you can do is "research". Narrow your list to no more than three boats of similar size, power, and features and deal on those. If you hop-skip around between brands, different sizes, different models, different horsepower, I can assure you that your first purchase will be disappointing and you'll probably end up paying too much for something you don't like. Good luck and enjoy whatever it is you end up with.

For a first time boater I would ONLY recommend an outboard motor. To me its a no brainer.Much less to be aware of ,much less to maintain,Much less to break.Charlie

Just my personal opinion, because it really depends alot on your individual needs and preferences.
Having said the above, in todays world, with gas prices going through the roof, I would seriously consider purchasing a 4 stroke or e-tech 2 stroke outboard engine. Depending on the overall length of boat purchased.
We presently own a 19' Arima Sea Ranger w/custom hardtop and we use it primarily for salmon fishing and crabbing, but also enjoy just cruising too.
The following is a link to their site.... http://www.arimaboats.com/
Lots of good fishing boats available, Grady Whites, Boston Whalers, Seaswirl stripers, just to name a few. All depends how much you want to pay. Good luck!

rick - First a big WELCOME

You have some great advice already. I would suggest tthat if you have no boating experience that you rent this season and shoot for buying next. Try all different types & sizes to see what suiits the needs of your family best.

Unless your boat needs a lot of horsepower, by all means an outboard. fred

Once you decide on a configuration and size, narrow you choices down to one or two brands remember that a two season old boat is a lot cheaper than a brandy new one.

Ah, the no. 1 most asked question here... O/B or the others.

The above advice is excellent. Another vote for O/B here. Sorry I don't have experience with salt water, but I've owned 4 outboard boats and 1 I/O. O/B all the way!
