Steering

I have an old 76 Chrysler runabout. I removed the chrysler eng (45 hp) and put a 50 horse evinrude on it. When connecting the steering, I hooked it up like it was on the chrysler., ie a slipjoint on a ball mounted to the steering arm of the engine. There are two places to mount the ball. The chrysler had the ball in the outerboard hole so that's where I mounted it on the evinrude. On the water, it is HARD to steer. With the steering disconected, both steering wheel and engine turn free. Where did I go wrong?

Is it hard to steer in both directions regardless of speed or is it hard to steer in one direction and worse as you go faster?

Both directions, high speed, heck, sitting on the trailer, too

It also has another mounting hole about an inch inboard. I believe this would give me ore steering distance, but would make it a bit more stiff.

OK, so its stiff all the time yet each component is free when seperated. Look for a binding or bad angle after its connected. Is the steering cable mounted to a standoff bracket on the boat or is the steering cable going thru the tilt tube on the motor?

Stand off bracket on the boat. I'm leaning toward the "Bad Angle" angle. It looks like if I went to the inboard hole ( closer to the engine) it might not have as sharp of an angle. But, I'm off to work out of town for a week so that will have to wait till I get back.
