My trim gauge quit working on a 1991 70 hp Johnson. I am going to try and find my manuel (recently moved) is there any way to tell which one needs repairing???

With the key ON, check to see if 12v is being applied to the "I" terminal of the gauge.

If that's okay, use a small jumper and connect the "S" terminal of the gauge to ground. That should peg the gauge needle. If okay here, the problem is with the sender (possibly stuck) and/or the related wiring.

Javelin...if you own an ohm meter or can borrow one, connect the two wires from the sender to the ohm meter and move the sender and watch the needle on the meter.....can't remember what the setting would be on the meter....probably in the 1X area. If the meter swings smoothly, problem lays in the gage. If meter acts like the trim gage....sender is wacko.

Connet the meter to the two wires from the sender that go to signal and ground on the gage.

Check for raw/broken wires where the wiring and cables come in contact under the rear casting deck. My recently aquired 90' Javelin had several raw wires there and where the wiring and cables exit thru the 'glass near the motor. Hope this helps.

As per my original reply in not so many words.... if the gauge pegs when grounding the "S" terminal, the sender is faulty.
