Have inherited Johnson 10 HP, but don't know whether it is 2 or 4 stroke. Looks like 2 stroke, but have been told may be 4 stroke.

If it is a 2 stroke, what mix?

S/N H8512194, Model No HJ10R5W.Says made in Hong Kong. Also anybody know what year?

Not used to Johnsons, have already got Mercury.

Kev

well if it's a four stroke it's gotta have an oil fill and drain. the head has to look a little different too.

H stands for Hong Kong, J for Johnson, 10 for 10hp
I'm stuck on the R5W, according to codes, R stands for Rope start, the "5" I'm puzzled about, the W is model run or suffix. It looks like a newer model number, but the model year would compose of two letters

Thanks Mikey

The fact that the carb is at the crank end of the block suggests it is 2 stroke, but have been told is an early 1990's so could be 4 stroke.
Been given bits of info from different people,-"a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" comes to mind !!
I'm sure somebody on this forum will know.

It's got good compression on both cylinders and is in very good clean condition from the outside, but I will not start it until I know what it is, don't want to wreck it.

Thanks Kev

Don't really understand why you won't start it?

You can fire up a four stroke with two stroke mix without problems. Put a small amount of mix in your tank and fire up. The motor will run normally whether it is 2 or 4 stroke, and you'd find out immediately what it was.

If it is a four stroke, just drain off the excess gas mix and refill with appropriate fuel. Don't waste the mix - put in in your car.

Just mix 2 stroke oil into the fuel tank @ 50:1.

If it's a 2stroke it won't sieze, if it's a 4stroke it may smoke a little but won't cause any damage.

Aldo

alright I can't find any evidence that it's a four stroke. If it was a 99 or newer there would be a "4" after the hp number. if it was older than that there would be a code beginning with "F" after the hp number. Plus since the carb is on the crank side that has to rule out being a four stroke. where would you be adding oil?

I think that you should completely dismantle the engine so that we will all know for sure whether its a 2-stroke or 4-stroke! :D

Thanks to all who replied.

Its a 2-stroke.

Had it out on the sea 2 weeks ago, went to Cornwall for a weeks holiday. After adjusting throttle and mixture, it went like a dream. Only on a 3m inflatable, couldn't keep it at WOT, too scary !!
More stable with more than 1 in boat. Had some good fun, caught some mackeral and put 'em on the BBQ.(killed & gutted them first !!)

Kev

Hi Kev

I don't belive you.

If you live in Brum and go to Cornwall on holiday you can't have a 3mtr inflatable with a 10hp motor, it has to be a 17' Fletcher with a minimum of 150hp on the back :D :D :D :D
