I have two 1959 engines that I am trying to repair, but I have never worked with boat engine repair before. BEFORE I take them to a specialist, what are some troubleshooting techniques I can perform, so I will have some symptoms to tell the technician ?

start here
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=36
give more info on your problems, and the model number/s
and expect the shop to tell you "it's to old"
Great moters though.
do you know how long they have been out of service? pull the plugs and put a little oil (tcwIII) into the cylanders with the plugs facing up and rotate it by hand if they have set for a long time this will lub things up. the impeller should be changed, and the oil in the lower unit/s.

If you have 1959 Johnson or Evinrude 35 hp motors, there are several people here with the same motor. But, you need to tell us what you've already done, how long they've been sitting, and any other information you already have about them.

You'll need a manual to do any serious work on them. To get started tell us where you are with them now.

Thank You ALL For Your Replies. Sorry If I Came Across A Little Brash - I JUST WANNA GET MY BOAT IN THE WATER, AND BEGIN MY JOURNEY TO SOME SERIOUS FISHING, LIKE THE REST OF AMERICA'S FINEST !;0)

I Am A New Boat Owner, And I Have Never Been A Mechanical Person, But I Am Nerdy Enough To Read A Manual, And Follow Instructions.

The Engines That I Have Acquired Have Been Sitting For A While, And I Do Not Know HOW To Get Them Set Up For Testing. The Guy That Gave Me The Engines, Gave Me TWO Engines ( one that works; the other to parts-out to get the other one working). He Normally Fixes Them Also, But His Schedule Just Did Not Allow Him A Break.

I Am Originally From Georgia, But I Live In Oklahoma City. I Do Not Know That Many People, And Have Been Screwed By Some of The Local Mechanics At Various Times. That's Why I Am Trying To Do This ON MY OWN.

I Guess The FIRST Thing I Can Do Is Get It Set Up On My Boat, And Look At It. I Understand I Have To Get A Fuel Tank / Line Hooked Up, And Then I Can Go From There ?!?! I Have Not Down ANY Work On Them, Because I Do Not Know WHERE To Start.

Any Of Your Advice Will GREATLY Be Appreciated

You seem anxious about it, Dude. No need to be.

Study the opening chapters of an OEM Service Manual and mysteries will become pretty straightforward information.

Take it one step at a time and don't try to do it all at once. Using the Manual it is not rocket science. Dang sight easier than programming a VCR, I'll tell you.

Good luck, and keep us up on what is happening. :)

You might need to rebuilt the carbs first and then as you said get a tank and some gas lines and then check to see if you are getting a spark then check your lower unit oil. Then try to fire her up and see what happens. By the way if you get her fired up be sure and check to see if she is pumping water. Report back here what problems you are having and one of our resident mechanics will be happy to help you. good luck
