Well, after all the work, and all the help offered here, today's fishing trip with my 80-year-old dad went very well.

The geriatric Johnson started up instantly, purred away from the dock, planed the boat out smartly, and even trolled for about an hour at around 2mph with no problems whatever.

It's been an adventure rehabilitating this engine. I've learned a lot, with the help of the manual and the great folks here.

The whole point for me was to get this motor running perfectly before my dad visited, so I could return a thousand fishing trips over the years with a day of fishing on a Minnesota lake.

We didn't catch a darned thing, but had a great time all the same.

When I got the RDS-20, it wouldn't start at all. It got a new crankshaft key and started up. Compression was just 85 on both cylinders. Then it wouldn't shift properly, but I corrected the problem (caused by me when I replaced the impeller). The last problem was one of it not idling smoothly. That's gone, too, even though I didn't do anything to fix it. I guess the Sea Foam cleaned out what needed to be cleaned out. Now, compression is up to 105, and it looks like I've got a nice reliable engine.

Thanks again to everyone. Anyone with a Big Twin is going to get all the help from me that I can muster.

Great news, CAT.

There are few things that sound and run as good as an old JohnnyRude that you brought back to fine tune. :)

Hot dog! The only thing better than hearing it purr was fishing with your dad and letting him hear it too. Sounds like you had enough enjoyment without catching fish this time. Take him again. This time to catch fish. Tell him last time was just a test run.
