FICHT Fault Code 28

I have two 2000 225 HP Evinrude FICHTs, one of which is throwing fault code 28 after being run for a while (30 + minutes) and then moved to idle (happens both when moved to idle ahead and when going to neutral). I know that the fault code is a "Shift assist circut malfunction," but my Service manual, P/N 787064 does not give any troubleshooting or correcting information. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

Information on the engine is as follows (obtained from Evinrude Diagnostics software v 1.1.0.6):
Model: E225FPXSSH
Serial: 4855544
Hours: 621:01:04
EMM Serial: 9240
EMM Date code: 22HB
EMM SW version: 3030258
EMM SE revision: 39429
Stored Fault Info: 28,n/a,616:36

Re: FICHT Fault Code 28

Use an ohmmeter to check the operation of the shift switch. Many times the switch will "hang up" in its bracket due to corrosion or a burr.

Also remove the shift cable from the motor, and while turning the prop, shift into fwd. and reverse. You should be able to move the shift linkage with 2 fingers on the motor's shift lever. If you can't or it is stiff, most likely the gearcase shift shaft o-rings are salted and jamming the shaft or the motor's shift bushings and linkage are salted and stiff acting.

Seahorse,

Thanks for the assistance. I will try that as soon as I can. Hopefully that will clear up the code throwing.

Question - do you know where the code is actually being generated? Are they a result of a sensor or sender that is talking with the EMM? Before the EMMs on both engines were replaced (both were OMC-manufactured, now they're Bombardier models), I was receiving bogus check engine faults unrelated to this one.

Thanks again,

Joe

Re: FICHT Fault Code 28

Murphy is at it again. This past weekend I worked the boat at the Norfolk Harborfest running both engines all day from Friday through Sunday, in and out of neutral, with neither engine throwing any codes. I guess my buying the $300 software and $60 cable cured that code 28 problem :D .

A different problem did develop with my port engine, however. By late in the afternoon on Saturday, my port engine (the one not throwing the Code 28), started stalling in neutral. My plan is to pull the plugs, clean and regap or replace as appropriate (for both engines). Is there anything else that would be recommended to help clear the carbon that has (most likely) built up  ? Both engines ran superbly during the 45 minute trip back to the dock.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Re: FICHT Fault Code 28

we had one in our shop doing the "code 28"...we replaced the bracket that holds the neutral switch then tie wrapped it tight...the switch tends to slide sideways in the bracket and let the end pop out to say "hey- I'm in neutral" even though you're in gear thus generating the fault

Remove and inspect each motor's exhaust pressure sender tube. Just follow the small hose from the EMM (computer box) down to the stb. side of the motor. Remove the stb. motor pan, or just pull it out of the way for access.

You should be able to blow thru the tube with only a slight resistance. If plugged up or distorted, replace them.
