135 evinrude starflite

Have 1973 135 4cyl. evinrude with electronic ing<br />have a poping( backfire) in the exhaust at idle only, long story have replaced everything from the fuel tank forward to include reed valves. have adj.the carb to be insink both butterfly closed at idle. i would like to know if the stator could be my problem, or the ing pickup. also have change the coils four of them dose the stator have something to do with diff winding AE: low idle windings high idle winding etc.my stator is a 9 amp.<br /> HELP SOMEONE please. ssispy

Welcome to iboats ssispy!<br /><br />Sounds like a lean pop at idle. Carbs been overhauled lately? Fuel lines tight and no leaks? Can you give us any maint history about the engine other than what you've done? Is this engine new to you or did the problem just crop up?

have had the engine for over fifteen years have replaced the carbs after rebuilding them with the same problem, all new fuel lines and new fuel pump ball and one new tank.it has been doing it for about three seasons now i buy new thing every year to try and fix it. after you get it past idle it runs fine also when you have it in a tank i can smell unburnt fuel. and the pop is not consitant but it dose it all the time while in idle or fast idle put in gear and crack the throttle she's fine.

Is it ONLY in the exhaust or does it sneeze back thru the carbs too?
