Another question about my new Evinrude 25 hp 1985.

The tiller handle gears won't stay splined together, which alows the tiller handle to be rotated without throttle response. I have to rotate the tiller handle until they mesh. How is the gears supposed to stay splined together? Can I buy a new arm? Can I rebuild this one? If so, where can I get the parts???

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Duke

it is possible that originally there was a thin metal spacer or two behind the gear on the side of the tiller arm that swings up

Will a good repair manual show an exploded view of the tiller arm?

Re: Evinrude Tiller Handle------------?

There should be a raised arrow on the handle gear, which should mate with a dot on the motor side gear.

There should also be a spring inside the handle which keeps tension on the handle gear. You can pack this spring with washers if needed to increase the tension.

If there is excessive wear, there ain't much else you can do.

I don't think that the spring is even present. I thought that I should have one. I will have to disassemble the handle and check it out.

Thanks
