Engine will run at times and not at others. No spark when not starting. Coil connections cleaned and sealed. Stator tests 11 volts. Books says it should be 18 - 20. Is that low voltage the most likely cause of the irratic starting? Magnets were glued in by somone else. Tach will not work. Regulator/rectifier is new. Power pack is 2.5 years old. Carbs rebuilt this summer. Fuel on plugs when there is no fire.

Regardless of whatever readings you obtain from the stator (keeping in mind that the stator is a two fold supply component), supplying AC voltage via the smaller coils to the rectifier area to be converted to DC to charge the battery, and also supplying AC voltage via the larger coils to the powerpack(s) to engage the ignition. Remove the flywheel, remove the stator and inspect it visually.

Should there be any cracks, evidence of melting down, a sticky substance oozing from various portions of it, replace the stator.

Those stators are prone to failing due to the extreme heat generated in that area, and when in the process of failing may function normally when cold.... but eventually they fail altogether.

Joe,
Thanks for the tip. The coil had black stuff dripping from two coils. To make matters worse whomever epoxied the magnets in the flywheel must have turned it over before the epoxi set because all six magnets where touching with one wide opening that looked as though a magnet had been there. All six magnets were accounted for, all I have to do is get them out and set them correctly.

Thanks again.

All done with new stator and good fly wheel. Engine starts immediately on engaging the starter.
Thanks again.
