Hello, I am having trouble starting my Johnson 60HP 2 stroke 1987 I am using the "engine manual" start proceedure without success. I can only get the engine to start when I have disconnected the fuel supply line from the tank."Should I be disconnecting my fuel supply line from my self venting 5 Gal. tank at engine shutdown"?

ps, I am also guilty of not counting to 8 on the electric primer in start up
I will try that tomorrow!

Thanks in advance
otto434

I cannot see any reason why.

Someone has suggested that air is being drawn into the system if everything is left connected
Can this be true?

When a 2 stroke engine floods', it will blow the unburned fuel right out the exhaust ports, and clear itself. If your engine starts after disconnecting the fuel tank, I would say it just keeps on flooding itself from a fresh fuel supply such as from the gas tank. Do you have a needle, and seat in the carb, (carbs) that need replacement. If they do, the engine will flood, and keep on flooding, as long as there is a fuel supply.

I think R.Johnson has a good idea, Otto.

Floats set too high in the carbs or leaking inlet needles can cause exactly what you are getting.

Good luck. :)

Engine starting Problem solved,
I was using the "engine manual" start proceedure
ie 1, turn key to switch on position. 2, push in to prime. 3, whilst pushing in turn key to ignition to start.
This is where the error was.
No 2 should have been press in and release immediately
3, turn to ignition to start engine.

Problem sorted I hope this helps someone else. Happy cruising
