tilt and trim not working

Hi Y'all,

I have an 1982 90hp Johnson and the tilt and trim is suddenly not working. Couple of weeks ago it worked fine, now all I get is a weak sounding click at the trim motor. Battery is full, boat motor itself cranks fine.

The motor is all the way down and I cannot move it by hand. Is there some kind of manual lock on this motor that has become locked? I looked for one but didn't see anything that looked like one. I have an old 40hp without t&t that manually locks up and down, but have seen nothing like that on the 90hp.

Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

as far as I know there's no manual lock, there is a manual release screw on the pump motor itself, it's a slotted screw. I think yours has relays instead of a solenoid like mine. if you can bypass the trim switches and relays (or solenoid) and jump the motor straight off the battery that would narrow things down. the last thing you want is a bad pump motor though

Re: tilt and trim not working

1998 johnson 40hp. like webwizard, my tilt and trim stopped working also. the trim motor sounds like it did when it did work, but the motor won't budge (it's down). after reading through the forum, i think i need to refill the trim fluid and maybe replace some o-rings. 1st i need to get the motor up though. how do i identify the manual relief screw? is there a diagram out there?

many thanks for any help!

Check your ground wires.

You can easily and not too expensively change your relays.

I had problems with my trim/tilt motor and I believe the final cause was the ground near the relays not making good contact.

the manual release is a slotted screw on the pump, it sticks out a little bit. it's not flat like the fill screw

Re: tilt and trim not working

thanks for the replies, gents.

it would be helpful if i knew what i was looking at- or if i was savvy enough to get a photo from my hard drive to this board!

i can see three screws all facing rearward. the one at the top i can't really get at because the motor's down. the two at the bottom are side-by-side. the bottom screw on the left (as you're looking at the back of the boat) is inset a bit and doesn't have a regular top- or it's real boogered up. the screw on the bottom right is about 7/8 inch across, flat top with a wide slot. I'm guessing this is the manual release.

There should be another screw for fill further up? Am I on the right track or should I suck it up, order a manual, and wait three weeks for delivery?

Thanks again.

I'm probably going to get the manual anyway...
