I've posted a few times about a 93 Johnson 60 hp motor that is hard to start. After more investigation, there is no clicking sound from the primer solenoid when i turn the key and push in to choke. However there are 13 volts or so that are being measured to the solenoid itself. I'm thinking the solenoid itself has gone out since it is getting power. What do you think? Is that an easy part to replace? Seems fairly simple, but wanted to know if there's anything I should look out for. Anyone got a part number for the primer solenoid and/ or approximate price for a new one?

J60TLETD motor , serial #G 03311022

Re: Bad Primer Solenoid

The original parts number for the solenoid was 0434762, replaced by part number 0437238.

This is from ishopmarine.com. You can see exploded views of the subassemblies, with part numbers there. Just click Parts Lists at the top of the home page, then drill down to your year, hp, and model.

The price there for the part is $68.47. With the part number in hand, you can shop around.

I hope that helps.

Re: Bad Primer Solenoid

I was looking at the solenoid in my shop manual. I believe if it's getting power, then something not right with the solenoid itself. I'm going to take it off, apart, and see what's going on inside of it. As far as cleaning goes, do you have any suggestions on what I should use? Carb cleaner? Or would something else be better.

Thanks for the information.

can the primer solenoid be taken apart and cleaned? with what cleaner? or if the solenoid is not clicking, should the whole thing be replaced?

More than I've told you, I can't tell you. If it's not clicking when it gets power, though, it's not working. Why, I don't know. I'm not sure it's serviceable.

Re: Bad Primer Solenoid

thanks, CAT. You've been a great help with the part number. I can get a replacement at a local marine shop for about the price you found. I'm going to take it apart first and try to clean it. I'm going to use carb cleaner and see if something might get unstuck. thanks again, if anyone else can chime in, i'd take the information as well.
