 Hey all - Hope someone can assist me. Please excuse my ignorance I actually work on computers but that always leads me to work on my vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, car and now... my boat. I have had this boat over a year... no real problems especially since it was stored for 20 years in a basement. Anyway earlier this year it didn't want to fire up - took it to the shop and it ended up being a loose wire ($30fix)... (he replaced wiring harness last year many$$$fix)... it ran great for a few weeks then reverse stopped working after looking into the selectric switch, forward, neutral, reverse buttons i noticed one of the wires was off the thingymagig so i put it back and it worked... then again while driving hit some wake and it stopped going forward, engine revved but no movement. So i pulled it back apart and took all three wires (all very loose)and secured them back (hoping i put them all back in the right places) and BAM it worked cruised around a long time then again hit a little wake and no forward or reverse. Checked the wires and this time they were all in place. Now my boat is sitting at the shop (going on 3 weeks) and I am told it could be the gear solenoid. Well, that sounds a little strange to me cause i would think if that was the case then it wouldn’t have ran again that second time? Not to mention the boat lights don’t work and neither does my speedometer….not saying these problems are related but it is awful suspicious. SO does anyone have any suggestions for me…. I am kinda sick of waiting on the boat shop to even take a LOOK at it (besides the quickie where he said it could be the solenoid -which he said he couldn’t get anymore)or the switch box , I assume forward, neutral reverse button switch which AGAIN he said they can not get any more but that if that was the problem he may be able to stick a toggle switch on it. I dunno – I just don’t feel the problem is that severe…. ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated…. THANKS!!!

Well, if it is the solenoids, they are available. You can find them at ishopmarine.com. Just click parts lists and drill down to your outboard model number.

That said, the fact that the motor quit shifting after major bumps says to me that it might not be the solenoids at all, but rather the wiring to the solenoids where it passes through the lower unit.

Some others here have indicated that these wires sometimes fail due to heat. You won't know without pulling the lower unit. The switch unit probably IS unavailable, but could be replaced, as your mechanic said.

The intermittent nature of your problem seems to me to indicate some problem with the wires. BTW, this gearshift mechanism is supposed to fail in Forward. That it does not also points to the possibility of a problem with the wiring.

Once the technician drops the lower end, you'll have a better idea of what's going on.

The part number for the upper solenoid is 0580780. The lower solenoid is 0580781. That may help the tech find them, if needed. Not cheap, though. Each is around $100.

I hope that helps. I hope the shop will have a look at it soon.

Thanks for the reply...
I feel it's the wiring as well... that is the ONLY trouble i have had out of that boat. And for what i was charged last year I assumed all the wiring was replaced ($700)but still i have wiring issues. He said he will let me know for sure tomorrow (not holding my breath) -- if he comes back and says its the solenoids I may try to find someone older and wiser that may be more familiar with this age motor. Actually, do you know where I can find a manual for this motor? The man i bought it from (one owner) is going to check and see if he still has it.... but I would probably need a more technical manual. In the future I want to take a look at it before calling in the reinforcements!!! Thanks again for you reply - And even though i am having trouble - i agree OLD BOATS RULE!! ;)
