Does anyone know how I can get a shop or owners manual for a Johnson Seahorse Motor. This thing looks real old but is in good shape with good compression.

I think it is Model # HS 10 with Serial #841145.

Also, is there any chance that things like air clearners, spark plugs etc. are still available?

HS-10 is a 1940 2.5hp engine. It has a 4.08 cubic inch displacement and makes it's power at 4000 rpm. Spark plugs are originally Champion J8J, which has been replaced with the easily found Champion J8C. I believe the plug gap is .030". Outboards don't have air-cleaners, so you don't have to worry about that. Although it's not often a problem, you can get a new water pump ring from grove.net/~noff/marx.html .

Reprints of the original factory manuals can be had from kencook.com theoutboardwizard.com maxrules.com and marineengine.com .

Hope that helps!

That's a 1940 2.5 hp outboard. Parts are going to be pretty scarce for that one. No air cleaner was fitted.

You might want to check with www.aomci.org

They're an antique outboard club, and have info on ways to deal with these older outboards.

The good news is that if you have compression and spark, you can probably get this little eggbeater running again pretty easily.

Hi Tom,
A well set-up HA-10 will just about start itself. That family of motors was well designed and included the 2.5 and 5hp models of the late 1930s to the late 1940s.. I had one of the 5hp models with an open flywheel - I could start that one without a rope giving it a flick of the wrist and it would kick off! VERY smooth runner and idled beautifully!

- Scott
