If you can't get the old tank out without taking a lot apart, mayby you can just uncover the top of the tank, cut the top off and fit a slightly smaller size inside of it?

I would also mention to not use power tools in you quest to find the problem. Sometimes this goes without saying, but its scary that you took it out, let alone had a BBQ on it when it reaked of gas.

Even a battery screwdriver could throw sparks and end up ruining your day, and boat.... if you are lucky.

Thats a great idea about cutting the gas tank but I would be concerned about cutting into it. (sparks flying everywhere). Im sure that can be dangerous with just the left over vapors in there. I might look into that though. Good suggestion.

This thread is disturbing. I hate to say it but this is a good example why it's becoming mandatory that people be educated before they get into a boat. It's going to save lives.

DemersChrisG

Doesn't you boat have two saddle tanks mounted port and starboard on each side of the boat?
If so you can run a dry rag under the bottom and find out where the leak is coming from. It may be from the sending units on the top, may be just a defective gasket. Don't turn on any thing electrical until you get the gas out, don't even disconnect the battery, till you get it out, and have all windows open and hatches open. I have never seen these saddle tanks rot out. Keep ups posted, good luck!! :)

No, I have a single 120 gallon tank. It's about 6 inch's thick, by 4.5' wide, by 8 feet long. It takes up a large surface area. Like I said before, it would take tearing apart the whole boat to free it up. I wish I had more to work with.
