The Grady was relaunched this week after a short time in the yards. Spent most of my time removing lots of old paint and vinyl. A bit of wet sanding, compounding, and waxing. Bottom sanded and painted. New name applied, some coors light on the bow, and she was back in the water. Some before and after photos:

Before....

Looks great!! I am curious about a couple of things. Do you know how much time and $ you have in the job? Also, is it easy to rent space to do that kind of work yourself? You know, with the stands etc.

Re: My new boat is relaunched- pics

thanks fellas. to answer some questions...

madalyn rose is my 2 yr old daughter.

i did the work at the marina at naval station annapolis. haul, block, and launch with a week of storage cost me $185. quotes from 2 other annapolis marinas had the costs at close to $500. the military has good deals sometimes.

spent probably close to $400 on materials. paint was $185/gal and the biggest cost. but i also spent too much on supplies and also have some things left over (dewaxer, wax, boat soap, etc).

i spent approx 22 hours on everything over a week, but i wasted a lot of time. i tried various things to get the paint and vinyl off- dewaxer, adhesive remover, accetone. nothing seemed to work. finally went with peel away paint stripper. transom also needed additional wet sanding with 1500 grit to clean it up. finished up with a good washing, and wax/buff with electric buffer. also did some interior cleaning and messing around.

sanded bottom with orbital sander, and painted with interlux micron extra.

still have some interior work i want to do, but don't we all.

Nice ride Matt! I have a 95 21' Grady 208 project boat, purchased last year. Maybe we could swap e-mail addresses and compare notes.

I noticed yours still has the plastic thru-hull fittings. I would inspect them very carefully for internal cracks and plan on replacing all of them. I had one crack off completely which made for a bad day on the ocean. Replaced all with Stainless.

osprey,

feel free to email me - bonzella@usna.edu.

yes, has the original plastic thru-hulls. since i wanted the boat in the water quickly for this season, i decided to leave them until this upcoming offseason. i inspected all and found one with a spiral crack. it serves as a fishbox drain and is above the waterline. i smeared the inside with 5200 and crack is gone. i'll watch them this season, but am not too concerned. when the boat comes out of the water (probably november/december based on previous years), i'll catch a decent winter weekend and replace all.

matt
