I have a 16'2" Smokercraft that is somewhat underpowered by a 60hp Evinrude, but I can run every weekend for a month on 18gal of gas. I put a hydrofoil on it, and it planes better, and rides better.

Now my question is what would smart tabs do for this boat? I sometimes worry that the fin puts un-needed pressure on my lower unit. This boat will do about 31 mph(gps) and Im not looking to go faster, but would like to maintain that speed with additional passengers, and maybe plane a little faster when there is someone besides me in the boat.

Here is a pic of the boat:
Similar question....I have a 16' aluminum flat boat with a 50 hp Johnson. Are there Smart Tabs available for my boat, and will they help?

Have a problem with porpoising and slight list to the right--console/controls and I sit on the right side of the boat.

Two batteries in the rear and a 13 gal. gas tank. Trolling motor on the bow.

Has trim and tilt....has small tabs built onto the back of the hull. Would I need to cut these off to put Smart Tabs on?

Whaddaya think?

Nate;

There is no comparison between the Smart Tabs and the Hydrofoil in terms of over all performance.
Your ability to achieve plan will be significantly better, the low speed wander (5MPH) will go away, the minimum planing speed will drop to about 14 MPH, the ride and handling wil be improved, and the top speed should go to about 34 to 35 if the Tabs are adjusted correctly. The hydrofoil must be removed. Use the St980-40.

Surmonkey;

Same goes for you and the list can be adjusted out easily. If the existing tabs are a welded on extension of the hull they may be bent down to do one of two things: help the boat to plane, or adjust for the listing. In either case they should be horizontal with the bottom of the boat, not deployed, and they do not need to be removed, but Call when you are ready to install them so that we can determine some mounting options.
