I had the idle adjusted on my motor, cause it died while idling but now it starts good & will idle but it won't run above a good idle. It ran like a top at speed before, so I know something was changed when idle adjusted. Even the fast idle lever when lifted does not make it idle as fast as it did. I'm going to take it back to the marine dealer & have it checked, but wanted some of you guys ideas as to what it might be.

John I had the same problem with my Johnson 55hp. Will it engage into gear and not throttle up? or will it only idle when you drop the hammer? I had to adjust my cables (just played with the threading on each) to get it idling how I wanted with the warm up lever up and when down. Listen to the other replies first though as I am just learning.

When I drop the hammer on it instead of taking off like a scared rabbit, it just won't go. The cables like yours may be what the problem is. It just didn't seem like I had any throttle. The guy at the maring place said he'd check it, but I wanted to get an idea before I took it. I've been burned before someone telling you it's this when it actually is something else. Thanks.

on my motor the knobs to adjust the cables are located on the bottom right side. Turn it away from you to tighten it, towards you to loosen. The top cable should be the one you'll need to adjust. Just play with it until it allows you to engage into forward. If anyone else has better advice please share or at least let me know if I'm talking out of my arse.
