1989 Johnson electrical problem !

Hello There !<br />I would like to know who can help me with the problem i have on my 1989 johnson gt 200 hp with vro pump on it . i rebuilt it the engine and right now the engine starts and runs but i have to keep the start key in start positin to keep the engine running, and when the engine is running and i put it in gear the engine shuts off. So i changed the voltage regulator and the solenoid but still does the same thing so i dont know what to think any more that could cause this problem .

There's a good Ignition system troubleshooting guide available for download from www.rapair.com although you need a meter & a bit of electrical knowledge to get the best from this. Doesn't sound like a solenoid problem as you can turn the motor over OK. Check that you have all the wires hooked up correctly. Sounds like the Powerpack is not being energised unless you have the key in the start position. Check out the stator windings.
