My Johnson Dont have enough fuel

Ok got a 1990 90hp V4 with the vro2 system on it. After a tuneup a few months ago(plugs, wires, filter, new fuel lines,) the engine ran great. the last few times i took it out it has slowly getting harder to start and will not rev up as high as it was. I changed fuel filter and installed new plugs. Still same problem. Finally after fishing for a few hours the other night it wouldnt start at all. Went to the back and started to pump the ball and it was squishy like it had alot of air in it. I pumped it a few times and it got hard. The engine started up after cranking for a moment and pumping the ball a few more times.( Fuel Starvation). As i started to take off, it started to die again . again pumping ball fixed it. drove about 10 minutes back to the dock and it did ok. Got home and checked the fuel lines for any leaks. none found. replaced the ball and hoses again. Problem persists. checked for vacum leaks on system all seemed to be ok. Checked the primer solenoid and it wouldnt squirt any gas unless the ball was pumped. I then disassembled the vro/fuel pump assembly and checked for tears in the diaphrams. none found on it. checked for blockages in hoses. all ok. best i can tell is this thing works off vacum and there is a hose going to a fitting on the side of the motor that they call a pulse limiter. i removed it to see if it had any blockage in it. none found. question, does this suppose to be like a one check valve or is it a reducer for the air flow? The engine will run fine if you hand pump the ball, but after runnning about 30 seconds starts to run out of fuel. Any suggestions would be helpful and thanks guys

If it were mine the first thing I would do is rebuild the fuel pump. Those diaphrams can develope pin holes in them and are very hard to see. Also check all the fuel lines and especially the primer bulb. They should all be soft and pliable.

Re: My Johnson Dont have enough fuel

Actually that was another question i had about the fuel tank. I tried to blow back through the hose to the tank and it wouldnt go. but pulling it out seems to be ok.(check valve appears to be working). I changed out the fuel hose again last night(different brand). Does anyone know of a diagram on the VRO pump assembly, I'm about 90% sure i got it back together correctly. but would like to be 100%.

Re: My Johnson Dont have enough fuel

I started the engine today and disconnected the hose to the pulse limiter. it is pulsing very well so i think i have determined it is the vro unit not pumping the fuel out. i then disconnected the fuel out line from the top of the vro and no fuel would come out. i again disassembled the unit and inspected it. again cannot find any holes and or tears in anything. The brown diaphram inside is slightly cupped. Could this be causing the problem. Any help would be great and thanks guys for your help so far

Re: My Johnson Dont have enough fuel

Newest update. I actually dissasembled the unit and started the motor with the fuel/oil mixture side off to see if i could see the fuel pump moving at all. It sucks in for a moment then does nothing. Revving the engine doesnt change anything. Does anubody know anything about the Pulse limiter on the block that the vacum for the fuel pump attaches to. Should it be one way check valve or should it allow air both ways and act as a air flow limiter?

Re: My Johnson Dont have enough fuel

Well i finally found a local marine repair shop that had a clue what i was talking about. He offered to test the vro for me and it was bad. Turns out it was the shaft indside the pump was wore causing it to bind up. He sold me the older style pump along with the manifold, bolts, and gaskets that i needed. Installed it earlier today and took it to the lake. engine fired right up and ran great . just dont like mixing the gas and oil now. But for $200+ dollar difference i can live with it. Thanks for your help everyone.

You can often buy a new VRO pump off ebay for $100-$150 if you want to stop mixing your gas.

Glad you found the problem.

Cheers.
