1974 50hp evinrude brought out of 2 year storage an plugged in to a new battery. When key is turned the motor tries to "spin" but does not fire. Checked spark plugs and they do not get any juice. When tried to turn on with spark plugs pulled out the motor spins fast and sounds fine. Need help with what to check first. This motor ran fine before storage.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Gas tank was emptied and replaced with new gas and also replaced with new battery.

Okay both positive and negative cables were corroded. REPLACED both, now the motor spins, at turn of key, but still does not fire. Pulled out spark plug...turned key...and spark plug gets very little spark. Any ideas????

The power pack or coils could be bad. I have the same motor and when the powerpack was bad it got no spark and the coils where bad it got very little spark

Unless you want to throw money at replacing parts. You have to start at the beginning when trouble shooting the ignition system. Charge coil, sensor, power pack, coils.

Thanks for the help!

Okay, now I got the motor to start but, it won't stay on for more than 2 minutes. I start the motor with the "warm up" lever all the way up and it starts and idles, however when that lever is pushed down it stalls and turns off. I'll look into replacing the power packs & coil but, what is the sensor?
