do you need to prime the engine after you cut off the engine everytime?

If I shut the engine off, even for a couple of minutes, it will start to run rough and evenually quit and then I sqeeze the bulb firm engine will start right up, and go on w/o any problems.

Re: primer bulb

Sounds like you have an air leak somewhere in the fuel line. You need to check it for leaks, and re-clamp it, or the primer bulb may have a pin hole. Rather than waste my time trying to find the leak, I just get a new assembly.

lee

Re: primer bulb

They were tight. Today I went out for a short ride before putting it on the rack, and it ran for 5 minutes and died. Pumped th ebulb back up and it would run at idle for 5 minutes and die. This was all at the dock. Fire back up pulled off for the ride and it continued. Each time, I would pump the bulb back up.

I put the boat on a work rack to clean the engine and it again would run for 5 minutes and die. Everytime I would pump the bulb, the rpms would rqise higher for a couple of minutes and then lower to idle and die. BUT, when I am on plain and going, it runs on with no problem.

Is there a chance that the original fuel pump has gone bad, and is causing this to happen at idle and low rpms?

Maybe I missed it, but what size and model engine? Have you tried a different fuel tank?
It could be the fuel pump.

Sorry,

1995 Johnson 112 SPL with just over 100 hours on it. 1995 Wellcraft ccf 190 has a built in 50 gal. fuel tank.

Re: primer bulb

The fuel tank needs to be vented is why I asked about trying differnt tank. Check the vent on your tank.
Is the fuel fresh, not last years?

Re: primer bulb

I have run all of last years gas out of it and I assume when I hear the girggling(sp) from the vent while filling the tank that it is clear and open.

Re: primer bulb

Maybe the non-return valve in the primer bulb is not working correctly. Is it mounted vertically or horizontally? I've heard that if they are mounted horizonatlly, they don't always prevent fuel flowing back to the tank. At low revs maybe the pump can't keep up the flow.

This sounds probable, as it's a fresh bulb. BUT - Presumably this didn't happen before you installed the new bulb? We haven't established this yet.

If it's a new symptom, and all you've done is replace the bulb, then that suggests the bulb or its installation is faulty. Grease the joints each side of the bulb (this stops air leaks) and see what happens. You can wipe the grease off after.

If this motor is new to you, then it could be a different problem. More info needed from you.

Re: primer bulb

This promblem existed before the new bulb, as I was instructed for this to be the first item changed being the cheapest/ simplist.

Re: primer bulb

You are filling the carb bowls with gas, they will run about this amount of time at idle. If you can keep the engine running by pumping the primer bulb, you are looking at a bad fuel pump. Either that, you have some dirty carb;s that won't draw fuel.
