I have a 1995 johnson 175 fast strike, and my lower unit is wiped out, lower drive shaft broke and pinion bearing housing has severe scarring in it, Can this area be honed and an oversized bearing be installed. THe case doesnt have any damage to it other than the internal scarring.
HAs anybody ever tried this.
C.W. Bly

Re: lower unit troubles

Lower drive shaft broke due to unit being run with water in gear case, winterized the boat last winter, installed new gear oil early spring, problem occured with lower unit, first thing checked was gear case oil and found water and severe meatal shavings, so I removed lower unit and started disassembling and thats when I found the broke lower drive shaft. The pinion bearing is where all the metal shaving came from. everything else looks fine, Lower gear set looks good. I would like to put in new bearings and seal set along with a lower drive shaft, but the area where the pinion bearing seats have very bad scarring and I dont think it will seat.Thats wher the original Question came in, Cna this area be bored or honed and an oversized bearing be purchased.

I did not mention that I had noticed a rpm loss of about 400 rpm's, THis is my first boat and I didnt relize that I had a problem till it was to late, very expensive lesson, any help would be appreciated.

C.W.

Re: lower unit troubles

Probably a new or used LU ids the best fix. Pinion bearings only come one size that I know of.
