Several symptons happening on different trips to lake:

1. First trip - Turn key and nothing happens. Checked wiring and waited 5 minutes and it cranked.
2. Separate trip - Turn key and starter turns but doesn't pop up to engage flywheel. Goofed around with starter and after 5 minutes it cranked.
3. Same trip - Turn key and 3 second delay before motor cranks.

Is starter going out, is it a battery going bad, or is it a short/loose wire?

Start with your battery and cables. Is your battery good? Clean battery terminals and bothe ends of both battery cables. make sure all battery cable connections are clean and tight.

Checking the wiring can mean just a look see or removing every connection, sanding lightly and reconnecting. And you did???

I cleaned connection to battery. Connections at starter and solenoid were very clean and tight. Seems to be doing Ok for now.

It sounds like you guys don't think this is a sign of a starter or solenoid going out then...???

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the input.

low battery or dirty connections are more likely then the starter going south. You also have a neutral safety switch in the start circuit that can keep the starter from working if the switch is sticking or the shifter isn't in neutral.

The symptom of slow cranking starter not allowing the gear to come up and engage, is more of a sign of a low battery or dirty connection, then it is a bad starter motor.
