I have an '82 Evinrude that starts up perfectly and has ran well...on the trailer. I took it for a shack down cruise this morning. After it had warmed up it died when the idle lever was lowered. I restarted it a few times letting it warm up even more after each one. Same problem. Then it would not start at all. Back at home it ran on the trailer but dies on low idle.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

here's a checklist of things I can think of:
1. carbs might need overhauled
2. check fuel lines and primer bulb
3. check compression to be safe
4. do a spark check on all cylinders

those are the basics, and get ahold of service manual, if you don't have one.

it sounds like the idle jets may be restricted but you need to rule out other things also

Thanks Mike
The fuel line and bulb are both good. Tough call on the carbs; It starts up and runs so well, which rules out the plugs (I checked them while troubleshooting another issue). I should check the compression anyway since I'll undoubtedly get asked when selling it.

by the way what RPM is it idling at when it cuts off? if you have access to a handheld tach or if the tach on boat is a reliable one, if you have one, verify the RPM's in the water. on dry land the idle will be higher due to lack of backpressure. the correct idle speed is 650 RPM in forward gear

I cleaned the fuel filter aand found nothing that would restrict flow.
The fuel line from the plug to the fuel filter had some craks along it so I replaced it.
I kind of sounds like it may be missing. I'm not too sure as I'm not familiar with multi-cylinder 2-strokes.
It dies around 1200 rpm.
What causes mis-fires?
