My 1976 135 evinrude starts right up but when I give it alot of gas it tends to stick or accelerates. I would pull back off the gas but sometimes it would still runs high or accellerates. Is it because its on muffs and not on the water? I am scare to put it in the water. What is going on?

it can run away without back pressure, you should not rev it without a load (in gear, in water) it run up enuf RPMs to sling the rods out.

welcome to Iboats!

Thanks for telling me, Its been sitting in the yard for a year and a half and I pumped the old gas out and install a new sending unit. I started it up and ran it on muffs and I was thinking if I gave it alot of gas a couple of time that it would blow out any old junk that might be in there thats when I notice the gas problem.

So you're saying that it wouldn't happen in the water?

when in the water and in gear, it should be fine. take her out, get in open water, and blow the cobs out!
if it has an air leak between the carb and the cylinder it can cause a run away also. so just be ready, but I think it was just because it had no back pressure or load on it.

If its been sitting that long, clean the carbs and install new kits before you put it in the water and put a load on it. Your pistons will thank you later.

Dhad, I've been conflicting myself into doing that, ever since the problem came about. Its been running fine other then rev-ing it up on muffs. I am deeply considering it,though. Before I let the boat sit, I ran the motor without the gas-line until it couldn't run no more, then I blow it out with an air compressor and wrapped the motor with turf and bungie cords nice and tight. I did it because the floor needed to get fix and I knew I wouldn't have the time to fix it. I'm going to try to clean the carb before the weekend begins. But I don't know, maybe after I take it out and see how it runs. I'm going to have to sleep on it. My Wife always tells me if it ain't broke don't fix. But I see where you're coming from. A nice clean carburetor would be a plus. Just finish rebuilding the floor sometime last week and I can't wait to put it in the water. If I don't clean the carburetor and the preformance is some what sluggish, I will regret not doing it thats for sure!

One thing I didn't do is change the lower unit oil.

It probably needs changing?

Johnshera,
Yes, change the lower unit oil. Don't forget to replace the washers/orings on the plugs when you do. Really should change the water pump impeller also. Take Dhadley's advice because 1. He knows what he's talking about. 2. If you run lean you could trash your motor first time out. 3. Running the motor dry probably wasn't a great idea.

How long should a motor go before you have to change the lower unit oil.

Oil should be changed every year at the end of season, or every 50 Hrs, what comes first.
