This weekend I had the boat out for a run, We stopped at a friends place, but when I pulled up to his dock i tried to put the motor in Neutral but it stayed in forward. My boat ran right through his dock... Quite embarrasing.. anyway when i got the boat back on the trailer I noticed that the Screw on the lower unit was missing. This would be the screw that you are not supposed to touch, the one by the drain plug. I tore the lower unit apart yesterday and replaced the screw but now it leaks oil.. Is there an O ring or nylon seal that is supposed to go here?? also can I use Loctight on this screw to prevent it from coming loose again?? If I can use locktight What kind should I use?? Thanks in advance. Timbit

There's supposed to be a little o-ring underneath the screw "your never supposed to remove". You can use loctite on it - that would be good idea.
Unless you applied sealant to the lower unit cap and seal carrier, they will leak. The spagetti particulairly needs to be backed up by it. If you look, you'll see the spagetti doesn't protect from water coming in around the cap screws.
Apply sealant to the cap screws too. This will allow them to be removed in the future.

Hope that helps!

Good luck!

Oops! Paul's got the answer for ya. Still, I think I'll run out and make sure that screw's in there and tight on my '58.

Boy, don't you hate trashing someone's dock?!? I hope the boat didn't get damaged.

Re: 59 35hp johnson Lower Unit

sorry, 1 more thing.. When I pulled the oil drain out I got 90% water and 10% really scummy lookin oil, I flushed the gears with fresh oil and then put it back together. Also I forgot to include that when i did tear it apart, The part that the screw holds.. I think this is what actually changes the gears?? it was chewed up a bit.. Not real serious but it had a couple of burrs on it and I filed them off. but This is a sensitive area correct?? Should I maybe expect early Failure??

I wouldn't be too concerned as long as you've got it straightened out. The more critical part is the yolk between it and the dog. Might want to make sure you've got neutral centered on the shift lever. (does your propshaft have the balls & springs for the detent on the dog?)

Sounds like you did the right thing with the oil. If it sits around like that it can pit the bearings, etc. 'Course, running without oil isn't good, but I think since you found the problem so fast (!) there's been no actual damage.

No RTV for lower unit repairs (or really anywhere on an outboard). The proper sealer is OMC (Boat Armour) 1000 sealer, but I've used Permatex "Aviation-form-a-gasket" #3 (bottle with brush) with great sucess.

Blue loctite is what I use.

Cool, Thanks alot I'll look to get the OMC sealer. I didn't see any balls or springs on the dog. Hopefully this prob doesn't resurface!!
I don't know where I'd be without this site!!

Ok, well do this then. Loosen the jam screws on the shift lever a bit, and jam the brass quadrant bar so it's out of the way. Then shift the engine into forward (rotating the prop so it goes in gear) and note the pin's position on the quadrant bar. Do the same for reverse, and adjust the handle until neutral is in the centre.

The above instructions only make sense if you're looking at the shift lever. :)
