how often crank to check compression

Hi Everybody,<br /><br />today i checked the compression of my 1983 35hp Evinrude.<br />I never done this before, so i don't know if i did right!<br />I put the gauge in the hole of the spark plug and pulled the starter about 4-5 times until i reched about 100 psi!<br />Is this ok?<br /><br />Thanks for Your answers!<br /><br />Flo

That's fine. Just crank it the same number of pulls for each cylinder. They should be within 10-15% of each other.

Remember that a compression test on a two cycle engine can be mis-leading. A high cylinder reading can be the bad one. Until I started using a leak down tester, I simply removed the cylinder head if there was any question. That has more than once, saved me a lot of lost time.
