Evinrude not getting fuel?

I recently purchased a nice little 16' center console powered by a 1964 40HP Evinrude LarkIII BigTwin, Model # 40453R...
The motor is clean a supposedly runs good, I cant get her to start or I should say stay running. When I put some oil and fuel in a bottle and spray it into the carb the motor will kick over if I continue to spray fuel in to the carb the motor will stay running as soon as I stop the motor stops. So I'm not getting fuel, I rebuilt the fuel pump and took off the carb to inspect / clean it, when it was off I found all kinds of clogs and crystallized fuel. I cleaned the carb reassembled everything and thought for sure it would be fixed and still no go. Does anyone have input, maybe a vacuum line?

Thanks, Chris cminfo@optonline.net

Re: Evinrude not getting fuel?

OK, you have made a good start. Since it runs when you spray fuel, you know you have spark and compression.

You'll need to do a couple of things:

1. Clean the carb thoroughly, including a soak in a dip tank after disassembly, popping the little domed plug out (one comes in the kit), and blowing out all passages with compressed air. Then reassemble, using the parts from the carb kit.

2. Remove and clean all fuel lines under the hood. Replace any that are cracked or damaged.

3. Flush out the lines and bulb from the tank until clean.

4. Replace all old fuel with new fuel/oil mix. I recommend a 24:1 mix (1 quart TCW-3 outboard oil to 6 gal. of 87 Octane gas.) Some run these engines at 50:1. It's up to you. It's critical to get all the old gunk out of the tank as well.

With all of that done, you should be ready to run.

Make sure all tests are done with the lower unit in water, at least 1" above the anti-ventilation plate above the prop. YOu will probably also want to replace the water pump impeller before putting this outboard back in service.

You might as well get an OEM manual for this engine. You're going to want it eventually.

Best of luck. Several of us have these Big Twins, and we're all fans, so ask away with any questions.

Along with CATransplant's good advice, try one more thing before you pull the carb. Disconnect the fuel line from the carb (from the fuel pump) and point it into a tin can. Crank the motor and see if the fuel pump is delivering fuel to the carb. Perhaps a misplaced pump part during the rebuild is the problem.

Thank You CATransplant & Xcusme for the quick response, I'm going to give your suggestions a shot tonight and report back. I did replace the tank and bulb when I rebuilt the fuel pump... I'm going to try Xcusmes test first and then start replacing the fuel lines on the motor. You may not hear back from me until Monday any other advice is welcome.

Thank You,

Xcusme-
I gave your test a try this weekend and when I pumped the bulb fuel would pour out but when I turned the key only very little fuel would come out. Is that the expected result I would think it should come out faster, do you thing there is a pressure leak somewhere?

Thanks, Chris

Re: Evinrude not getting fuel?

I've replaced all of the lines and still no luck. One test I tried was, when I had the pressure line that connects to the fuel pump off I placed my fingure over the end and had someone turn the key to see what kind of pressure was comming out and it was weak, would not even push my fingure off. Does any one know what type of pressure should come out of that hose? And if this is weak as I susspect what needs to be done inorder to get the pressure back?

Thanks
