Can you believe it!! My very first post and I have a problem!
Notice nobody ever registers to solve somebody elses problems?? :D

Anyhow on to my problems... This boat has set for several years. Got it running Saturday after cleaning out the carbs and a good dose of fresh fuel. It appears I'm getting water on the top spark plug. Seems to run o.k. but the droplets of water are present when I pull the plug later. Compression test showed 145 psi on both cylinders. I was impressed with the readings, but baffled as to where the water is coming from. Could it be a build-up of condensation? Think motor might be running cold, head seems cool after extended WOT run.

Think I need to do some more cleaning on the carbs, it seems lean at idle and then stalls unless you bump the choke.

Another problem I'm having is while running down the lake WOT it will suddenly loose what sounds like about 200-300 RPM's and about 2 MPH for no reason. Tried squeezing the bulb and did nothing. Played with throttle linkage and timing linkage while at WOT and saw no change in rpm. This is very erratic, will do it sometimes, other times it won't. Sometimes if you shut it down and then take off again it is fine, sometimes not.

Any and all comments, advice, and sarcasm is appreciated!!

Thanks,
Bill

Re: 1974 Evinrude 50 HP Questions....

Bill.... There could be a few things (or a combination of all) that would result in water gaining access to the top cylinder.

There might be a very slight flaw in the head gasket which is allowing water to gain access to the top cylinder, or a flaw in the sealing surface of the cylinder head or block.

The inner exhaust baffle plate (the large plate on the side of the powerhead) may have developed a slight warp, or one of the two associated gaskets could be failing.

I'd suggest that you remove the cylinder head first to inspect that area thoroughly.

Note: If you're any relation to, or know of a Cliford Poling, contact me via my email address as listed below.

Re: 1974 Evinrude 50 HP Questions....

One thing I forgot to mention, both coils have HUGE CRACKS in them!! Hate to spend money when I don't have to. Would this cause an intermittent loss of power? Like I said, the motor runs well most of the time, hate to tear it down in the middle of our season. Will I be doing further damage by letting it go?

Sorry Joe, don't know any Clifford Poling, but I'll keep an eye out for him for ya!! Does he owe you money, or do you owe him?

Another quick question, where's the best place to pick up a manual for this motor? And what's the best manual to get?

Thanks Again,
Bill

Bill,
Fix what you know is wrong before fixing what might be wrong. Those cracked coils definitely need replacing.

The coils could break down if they get hot causing a loss of power, i had that happen to my 74 50 hp and replacing the coils solved that.

Reeldutch:
How 'bout I just ship my motor to you and you do the same to it??? Very nice job. Bet she runs as good as she looks!!

Think I'll replace the coils then go from there. Any chance of doing further damage by continuing to run the motor with the small amount of water getting into the one cylinder?

Thanks again to all,
Bill

Ignore the water problem and look forward to a major powerhead failure.

working on this moter wasnt so hard.
its a prety staight forward motor.
the hardest part is to remove the block of the midsection.
but with help from people on this forum i was able to pull this stuck powerhead off.
if you spend some time and money on it you will have a great litle motor, rure its not a e-tec but it wil beat its price.

reeldutch
