Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

If you were getting water in cylinder #1, the spark plug would look clean. Its hard to tell from the picture, but the plugs look the same.
The piston does look like its running leaner.

The plugs and combustion chambers (the heads) are identical looking.....

#1 cylinder is the only "dry" looking piston..

Check your top carb and make sure its not running lean. I would pull it off and tear it down and inspect the jets and fuel circuits.
Clean it with compressed air.

Did that a couple weeks ago... I let them soak over night in carb cleaner, and blew 140PSI compressed air thru those bad boys... rebuilt them with OEM kits...I feel confident they are good to go.....

Now, reeds are a different story....

A hole in it, you mean like the #3 piston.

Piston 1, 2, & 4 are standard bore, #3 is .020 over..... and the only one with a hole in it..

Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

Thats pretty daring, 5000RPM across the water with the engine cover off , yee haw!!!!!! unfortunitly I believe I may have to do that in order to elimanate any possibility of timing being an issue....

Wish me luck..... This weekend I will have to try it...

Around here, we call that bait. :D

Just kidding. Be careful doing it that way.

Be sure and check your cylinder heads with a flat piece of glass and a feeler gage while you have them off. ;)

Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

Basscat, I have been following all of the post on the OMC Guru's thread, it appears this 5000 MAX RPM issue crosses over all size motors...

Its pretty interesting, I cant wait for someone to figure it out.... They should recieve a prize.....

Tomorrow I plan on running with engine cover off and verifying timing.....

Checking the flywheel key, what should I look for, I have intentions of checking mine just because......

I was only reaching 5300 rpms max on my boat at wot, but I think I found out why by accident. My tach wasnt working so I bought a new OMC tach. It seems somebody told me that my tach should be set on 6P, but by accident I found out this was wrong. Mine should have been set on 4P which turns out the rpms will rise. A silly mistake I should have caught sooner.
I havent taken the boat out on the water, but I feel real confident that I will reach my 5800 goal, or at least come close.
Here check this out. web page

When checking the flywheel key, make sure it fits snug and tight in both the crankshaft and flywheel. Make sure its not worn.

Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

Interesting..... When I pull my flywheel I will count the number of poles.... It may very well be the same thing...

I had an OMC tach last time and now I have a Teleflex gauge set....

Maybe I have been chasing my tale this whole time... wouldnt that stink.....

The question I have though is the top end speed difference... although I have a different speedo as well...

Now you really got me thinking!!!!! and that alone is a scary thought....kinda like the intestine thing.....

Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

OMC tachs are the most accurate. All factory speedometers are not to accurate. When judging the speed, gps is the only accurate way.

Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

I hear ya... I will start with counting the number of poles on my stator, get the tach reading right and let the speed fall where it may..
