Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

Hey BC, I believe I have an 8 pole stator but I am not sure... My stator p/n is 583104, superceded by 583672. It has 4 large pick ups on each side, and 2 smaller pick ups on each end....

I believe that makes it an 8 pole stator.....

If that is the case, should I change the setting on the back of my tach to 4P??????

Does it look like this? If so yes, set your tach to 4P. Incidently, I set mine to 4P and was turning 6100 rpms today. ;)
Mine has a black coating covering the entire thing. Its all black and you cant see the individule post, but on this one as well I count 4 large pick ups on each side and 2 on each end, So yes I woould have to say they are the same...

Mine is a 10AMP system....

By the way, when you set the tach to the 4P position, what did your idel RPM look like, did it stay the same, or did it show higher as well??

The idle showed higher on the muffs, but in the water it idled at 650 in gear. Thought that was kind of strange, but none the less I could tell my tach was reading more responsive with the engine rpms. As I throttled it up quickly, so would the tach move quicker.

Cool, after studing the picture you posted, my stator is identical.. So I set my tach to the 4P position... I reset my idel to match the tach because it showed higher... No big deal there I can re-adjust in the water if necessary..... It needed to be lowered anyway...

Thanks for the info, I will let ya know after I take it out... (hopefully tonight)

Good I hope this works for you. By the way, looking at those pictures, I wouldnt raise the engine up just yet. See what happens now with the tach.
You may be able to bring it up one notch, but its hard to tell with the lower unit touching the trailor in the picture. Once you have the boat in the water, you may be able to tell if you can raise it any higher with out the AV plate being to high above the keel.

Yea, I wont raise the motor until after I run it tonight..... It was a thought though since I was fighting an RPM problem.....

Where in central texas are you located... We were looking at moving to Columbus, about an hour west of Houston...

Hey BC, I posted my test results under the "DHadley, could you look at my pics" thread..

Long story short, with my tach set at 4P I was pulling 7k+ @ 40MPH.... & no change when I ran with my engine cover off....

Next step I think is too raise the motor up 1 hole..

That engine won't turn 7k with stock reeds...and I still think it should be set on 6P.
Your slip ratio isn't "Way" off using 4800 with a 19 pitch prop, and that's a heavy boat.
See what DH has to say...

Walleyehed is probably right. With a 10 amp charging system?
I read where you said 26* timing at wot, thats not right either.

Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

It should be at 28* WOT, but since I was only pulling 4800 RPM I didnt want to mess with it until I consulted the experts here on this board...

I figured 7k was a bit off..... As far as the weight of the boat, I dont believe it is that heavy of a boat, Its older yes, but next to my buddies 20' Chapparel it looks as if it would be a fairly light boat..

I know that isnt very scientific, I am running a single axle trailer without trailer brakes, and it doesnt feel heavy pulling her around...

Re: Not reaching max RPM!!!

No... as a matter of fact I just got back from vacation with my boat... We were at Las Vegas, actually Lake Mojave for 5 days.... Boat ran perfect.. Unfortunitly, I spun the hub on my 13x19 SST prop so I ran my 4 blade composite (backup) prop...

The most I ever saw was 5k even with the 17 pitch.. I am in the process of finding another tach to verify my tach.... Not an easy process, the boat shops around my area are 3 weeks out..
