I have a 1990 Johnson Tracker T40 ELESR outboard motor. It idles good. Revs up good when it's not in gear. When I put it in gear there is no power it slowly moves. Is there a power-pack in this unit that could be the problem? Or could someone guide me down the right path to solve my problem. It ran great the last weekend and had no problem pulling a tube. Looking for suggestions.

Johnnie

Re: power loss

I don't know were to start. Don't know if I should check under the fly wheel or check the coils. It revs up good when not in gear but when I put it in gear it just dogs. I don't get the rpms. The plugs look good, I have a good gas filter,& good fuel supply. I checked all the linkage to the carb. I seems like the carb just doesn't want to open up when I have a load on. It just doesn't want to get up and go.

Re: power loss

Check to see if you have spark on all cylinders. Also should check compression.

Re: power loss

i would try spraying some mixture 50:1 with a plantsprayer into the carbs trought.
if this helps to get this thing going i would realy give the carbs a good cleaning.
also check you fuelpump if it has enough fuel pressure.

Re: power loss

Does this engine have VRO ? If NOT the regular fuel pump can rupture its diaphram, and flood one cylinder, and keep it from having any power output. But it will usually run when not in gear. Can you get some insulated pliers and remove one plug wire at a time?If one cylinder is dead, this could be the cause.

DHP

Been following this thread. You state that you have good compression and spark.

It sounds like you have fouled carburetors. The cure would be to remove, clean, and rebuild them. Carb kits would no doubt be available at your local dealership and possibly at NAPA.

However, before doing that carburetor work, try a new set of Champion QL77JC4 plugs, gapped at .040. The thought occurred to me that possibly you simply fouled a spark plug.

Re: power loss

well, back again. someone told me to check for air leaks and fuel line. did that. found leak in pick-up tube and tank. took boat out. still same thing. next step was to remove carb- low and behold.... dry bowl. inlet valve needle stuck. the question is.. squeezing the bulb- should I get fuel through the vro pump? might be a dumb question, just wondering.hopefully this will be it. thanks again guys.
