Fuel Pump Question

The fuel pump had been disconected from the self oiler before I bought the boat. I had to rebuild the powerhead because all of the rings were stuck and #6 had broke rings. The fuel pump was surging taking in a lot of air, so I redone all of their so called plugging the lines by plugging the oil line at the pump. The pump still surges once every 3 to 4 seconds instead of constant. Can anyone tell me if it should surge at all? The motor is a 89 model 175 horse (J175STLCEB).

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Sort of confused here. The fuel pump is not normally disconnected from the VRO. The oil line to the VRO is normally disconnected and the fuel pump remains connected so that premix fuel can be run. Don't know what you mean by fuel pump is "surging". If you mean the engine is surging, then fuel delivery is likely the problem. Since the VRO had been disabled, make sure it is pumping oil or you may be rebuilding the engine again. Run pre-mix until you are certain things are ok. As for the surging, make sure there are no air leaks in the fuel line and fittings, the line is not restricted, the pickup in the tank is clear, the tank is properly vented. Check fuel flow from the outlet of the pump. The fuel pump itself may be weak.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

The oil injection on the back of the pump has been plugged. I'm running double mix gas/oil for the breakin period. The pump was sucking a lot of air in through the oil injection hose so I replugged at the pump, but it still seems to be sucking a little air from somewhere. If you place your hand on the pump you can feel it viberate every 3 to 4 seconds like it may have a air leak. When I pump the bulb up tight theres no leaks on the gas line. Should the pump pulse any?

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Can you buy a rebuild kit for this pump, or do I need to order a new one?
