Currently 350 hours, 150 since last service. Getting a little hard to start. Also had a problem not disengaging forward when returned to neutral. Also a little hard to put in reverse. cables getting old and tired ? or lower unit troubles ?
What should i do as a service regiment ? replace plugs ? (is indexing hard to do ?) water separator ?
How often should the inpeller be changed ? I am out of warranty anyways....
Up to now, it has been running really well, never a problem.

Replacing / indexing plugs is pretty easy, go here for details:

http://www.boatsetup.com/PlgIndexing.html

Regarding your shifting issue its probably just a matter of a cable adjustment. Water separator, gear lube, decarbonize should be done annually. Water pump is due. I recommend getting the factory service manual if your going to tackle the water pump or any of the "bigger" things yourself.

-John

Thanks for the feedback,
I could not get that link opened.

Anybody have a schematic of where to find the oil water separator ?

Kind of "have" to do it myself, around here any shop says "drop it off" and it'll be ready in 3-4 weeks, they do NOT make appointments.....I do not want to be boatless 3-4 weeks in peak season.

Oh, when you say water pump do you mean the entire water pump or just the impeller ? What do those run ? Still shoots PLENTY of water out the pee hole

Do a search on this site for indexing, there is plenty of good stuff on it, it's easy, need a torque wrench though. I'm not sure what you mean about the oil separator, but the fuel/water separator is in a different spot on all boats, it's usually either on the transom or in the bilge somwhere. Some guys say to change your impeller every 2 years, but I think that's a little over kill, I go at least 3 and usually 4, but it depends on usage, if your doing 100+ hours a season, then maybe every 2 years is a good idea. Definitely change the lower unit oil, this should be done every year or every 50 hours to be safe. It should start better when you put new plugs in, my 2000 150hp Ficht tends to start hard at the end of the season, but new plugs always helps, Fichts eat plugs.

Thanks, my plugs have AT LEAST 150 hours, probably closer to 200, so I guess they are due. I do have a torque wrench so should be all set.

with regards to the fuel water separator, there is none ON the engine ? I did not check the bilge yet, that I should be able to figure out.

Oh sorry I forgot we were talking about a Ficht for a minute. The fuel/water separator is in the engine, you have to pop off the air plenum on the front of the engine and it will be behind that sitting vertically. Watch out when you pop the plenum off, there is a sensor in it that needs to be unplugged in the starboard side of it on the bottom. Usually they reccomend Ficht plugs to be changed every 50hrs, I do them at 50hrs and they are pretty shot, so yours are probably completely gone, it will idle and start a lot better with the new ones.

P.S. Lay a rag or something down underneath the filter when you take it off, gas will come out. And fill the new filter most of the way up with gas before you install it.

Thanks, looks straight forward....I managed to change the head gasket on an 86 corvette, so I figure this out to be doable
