Clunking Evinrude

I'm lost and no one seems to have the answer. I have had the boat in the shop twice yet still my 90 v4 evinrude clunks at around 4100 rpm underload or not. I have changed the shift lever, shift ay and the 2 control cables the things the pro's thought it might be. The gear oil is clean showing no damage down there ? Yet the clunk remains. Generally it just violently clunks once and then keeps going, but sometimes it will clunk several times a few minutes apart. Other than that the v4 runs and starts great ???? any answers out there

when it clunks is it like you hit something ? if so it could be your clutch dog and forward gear

If the "clunking" gets more frequent, jim matthews has it nailed. BTW, your motor should turn more like 5800 @ WOT, not 5200.

It is getting more frequent and at lower rpms like 3000. It is a very sharp clunk that shakes the whole boat. Almost like you've hit a tree and drove right over it. What is BTW ?

It dosn't do it when you're getting upto plane, generally after you've maintained a constant speed or near wide open ???

sounds like its slipping in & out of gear ( clutch dog forward gear)

The shop is telling me now that it's likely the magnetoe ??? They say they think it's a dead part on the magnet and as a result one of the pistons isn't firing creating the clunk ????. I'm scared to tell them to replace it in case it is the gears. They say the gear oil doesn't show any problem ???? I don't mind paying to get it fixed but I'm tired of paying to fix things that are not the problem. I've now paid over $400.00 in replacing shift and cable stuff just to see I still have the clunk ????<br /><br />If it is the clutch dog or forward gear, wouldn't there be shavings in the gear oil ????

By the way, I'd start looking for a new shop. From your description of the problem, any competent shop would have immediately gone for the clutch dog.<br /><br />There's nothing that a "dead part on the magnet" would do to cause this symptom. In fact, there's no such thing as a "dead part on the magnet." That's just smoke being blown up your leg.<br /><br />So far, you're out $400 for parts that didn't fix the problem. Don't spend any more until the lower unit comes apart and someone looks at the clutch dog.
