Hey TD !

It should turn free...yep just like your house fan.

That is if its not in gear....And if it was in gear I doubt that you could turn it by hand.

Take the prop off the shaft...then try turning the prop shaft by hand. if you can your home free.

If you cant however ....!

Then your gona have to take uh look inside the the lower unit.
Dont try it with out a manual tho...good luck!

I had a funny noise when turning my prop by hand once that turned out to be dirt lodged inbetween the prop and the bearing carrier... have a dusty driveway, you know.

if it's something like this, pulling the prop and turning the prop shaft by hand would let you know.

matt

I'm no good at deciphering serial #'s so I'm not sure what model motor you have. Is the "black knob" maybe a rubber-coated push-button kill switch connected to the motor with electrical wires? You push it to stop the motor.
For the stiff squeeky prop, ditto to the others - take it off and have a look. Usually you just take out a cotter pin, unscrew the prop nut, and pull the prop off. Look for a bunch of fishing line wound around the propshaft. If there is, get it out of there and look over the prop shaft seal close. Fishing line will often wind up in there and tear the seal up. Oil leaks out. Water gets in. Kind of a pain to replace but not serious or expensive. It will get serious and expensive quickly if you don't replace it, though.

Was there old oil in the lower unit that you drained out before you put in new? If there was, what color was it? Any metal bits come out? The old oil will tell you a lot about how your lower unit is feeling. Stinky amber colored oil means all's well. Coffee-with-cream colored oil means water getting in. Little metal bits are real bad news.

Dthinh,

A quick search reveals that you have a 4hp 'Rude...
It's a direct drive motor...no gear shift...it operates in drive whenever it's running. To get reverse, you rotate the motor 180 degrees.

That 'shift selector' you mention is the throttle.

The prop SHOULD have resistance if you turn it. It's turning the driveshaft, crankshaft and flywheel! The squeeking sound is the sound of the dry water pump impeller turning in the water pump housing....

The upper adjustment knob is the slow speed mixture, the lower 'black knob' is the high speed mixture. Both knobs are labled......

If there was ever a time for a service manual...this is it...

Is the lower unit off the motor? OK, when you turn the prop, does the driveshaft turn? The resistance & squeaking noise is your water pump impeller - absolutely normal (worry if there ISN'T resistance).

Thanks to our good friend Joe Reeves, follow these destructions on adjusting your carb.

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle va /lve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, wating for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

--------------------
Joe (30+ Years With OMC)

These adjustments are to be done with the motor on a boat and in the lake. Don't run your motor with the lower unit out of water, really bad things happen if you do.
