I have read the posts on this topic and nothing seems to fit very well so here goes.
When I bought this 20 hp for 50 bucks it made spark and has 90 lbs both cylinders.
I rebuilt the carb except for the welch plugs.
Cleaned and blew it out and instlled full kit.
Adjusted the float inline with carb joint.
I bent the float arm on the float side of the float valve.
New plugs 4c6 champion.
Set the mixture screw at 1 1/2 turns out.
Pulled till arm was numb and discovered that it would only fire and start if the throttle was cranked to fast.
Once running it will hick up and pop back.
Checked the points and reset to .020 both.
Top of the case is clean, no oil around the top seal or inside the electronics.
Restarted and same poping.
Pulled reeds out and one petal on the lower side was weeping dark fluid, gunk and oil?
That one leaf does not seem to be flat on the plate. Maybe 2 or 3 thousandths open. The others all seem flush.
Is this ok or should I replace the reeds.
There is a lot of black gunky oil in the oil hole at the bottom of and behind the reed plate. (blocked?)
Also I found that the bulb would go soft between goes and I had to pump it to start. I noticed in other posts the soft bulb thing was mentions but not what might cause it or how to solve it.
Also I have seen it said that the advance mech. under the flywheel can affect the timing. Is there a way to adjust this? Maybe this why it only starts when the throttle is cranked.
I am sorry if this is vague.
Any help would be appreciated.
