My Evenrude Fisherman stopped while running down river suddenly. I am assuming it is a fuel blockage. Being new to engines, i thought i would try cleaning the carb but cannot get to one of the nuts because the starter pull cord mechanism is in the way. Can someone tell me if i need to remove this first and how i go about it to avoid a nasty spring re-coiling accident??

Hi Teamtalk,
You need to partially remove the recoil. If you pull the two bolts at the top of the recoil you should be able to pull the recoil up and forward just enough to snake a wrench behind it and remove the carb nut. Keep track of the vertical rope guide, too as it may fall out when you pull the recoil upwards...

- Scott

Thanks Scott, i will try this in the morning, the engine just died on me and i know fuel is getting as far as the float chamber but thats all i know. I am hoping to find an obvious blockage in the carb otherwise my knowledge ends there! Cheers, Dave (UK)

i would check the ignition system for good sparks at the plugs before contemplating renoving/ dismantling the carb. I reckon the trouble more likely lies there especially if it just stopped dead with no warning

OK. Today i have checked the spark which is good, fuel is getting through the carb, no obvious blockages and the plugs are dry, so someone has suggested it is a reed valve or broken seal. I think it could be time to buy a new engine as we don't have many OMC dealers in the UK.

Those are both extremely unlikely reasons for your engine to stop working. Especially in the way you described.

Do you have any idea what year this engine is? Model number, etc? Does spraying fuel/oil mix down the carb throat make it run?

You probably won't see any obviously blocked passages in the carb as all of the passages are very tiny. Take an aerosol can of carb cleaner and spray every passage. Then put in a rebuild kit. If there aren't any dealers around buy one off the internet. If you already have the carb apart, it's worth it to do a rebuild.
The same thing happened to me with my little 1964 Johnson 5.5. It turned out that the fuel hoses were desintergrating and the pieces were making their way into the carb. If your engine is older, check the fuel lines for this. If they look just slightly rotted, replace them.

Especially check the lines where they clamp on to the carb bowl & fuel pump. I have a 20 HP Johnson where this happened. I got a rebuild kit for the carbs and when I started to take the carb off thats when I found the decaying lines. So I just went to the local marina & got some fuel line (2feet) replaced the lines all for $1.00. Works so much better now.
