switching to stick steer, have questions???

I currently have an 1982-ish Mercury 20hp manual start tiller steer on a 16ft aluminum duck boat. I would like to set up stick steer so that I can see the stumps at 5:00 am headed to the swamp, so I have plans to eventually purchase an eletric outboard, preferably 25hp. I have not yet purchased a motor but I have an opportunity to buy some used OMC controls.

1) If I buy a non-OMC motor, can I use the same controls?

2) They were used on a 17 ft side console previously. is there a chance they may be too long for my boat?

3) Could they be too old for a current motor or too new for an older motor?

4) Having not seen them and just trusting the other guy that they are in good shape, is there conditions that I should be concerned with that they might not work? I realize that is a non-specific and stupid sounding question, but please give some general thoughts on buying used controls.

Thanks for any help you can provide. The members on this site are always incredibly helpful. Thanks,
Duckboat maniac

Ignore all that please! My granddaughter is here!!

1)Possibly
2)If they are the cable type, yes they will be too long but you can shorten them no problem.
3) It depends on whethter or not the steering arm (not the tiller handle) is compatible with the setup.
4)ALL OF THE ABOVE!!
