Just pusrchased a TD 20 5 Hp. Not getting any fire, had new plugs, and points have been cleaned and checked, good compression. What could cause no fire? condenser or dual coils?? And where could I fine a repair manual for this motor?? serial # 688191

thank you

Welcome to Iboats!
I know it may seem obvious, but do you have spark?

The TD-20 has two, independent magnetos, Dottie.

Though it is possible, I think it unlikely that both would fail. Check that the points are not grounded by a "kill" wire.

You could have two bad condensers, two bad coils, or something common to both mags, like the cam or the flywheel.

Good luck. :)

I agree with JB, if the points are gapped to open .020" max, and there's no 'kill' wires attached to the points, and the magnet in the flywheel works, and your spark plug wires arn't tattered, then you should have spark.
'Course you don't, so it's got to be bad condensors (300153 from OMC/BRP) or bad coils. If the ignition coils are intact, they're likely good. I ran across this helpful article (TD coils can be hard to find):
oddjobmotors.com/tt1_replacewico_coil.htm

Hi Dottie,
Those coils very rarely go bad on the TD/TN series - my bet is your issue is somewhere else. Are the points gapped at .020" and CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!! If memory serves, there's an ignition cut-out that kicks in when the magneto lever is all the way to the left to kill the motor. Any chance the wiring for that is marfed up?

- Scott

That engine has a magnet ring that is keyed to the flywheel, air gap between this ring, and coil heel's can be critical. It's also possible that those 50 year old coil's, and condensor's could be dead. Have you checked those with a coil, or condensor tester?
