I bought a 1980 14' Crestliner with this old Evinrude outboard on it. This thing's older than me.

Anyway, I've had nothing but trouble with it so far.

1. A spun hub on the propellor. Replaced it.

2. Motor stuck in reverse. Fixed. Happened again. Fixed again.

3. Motor died while on the water. Could not turn flywheel.

Back at home, I removed the lower end and the flywheel was still jammed. I managed to get it to turn with some effort but seems to have some really stiff spots over a full rev.

Any suggestions?? Crankshaft bent? What would cause it? Overheating?
I actually managed to get it running in pale of water but it sounds really rough and smokes a fair but too.

Can anyone recommend a good, honest, competent outboard repair shop in Toronto area?
Is it even worth fixing this antique?

Any help or advice would by hugely appreciated

Sounds like piston/rings.Would make a good anchor. If its that old,I would seek out something newer/better.

Most likely overheating. There isn't a whole lot that can kill one of those outboards, but neglecting the cooling system is one sure fire way. Always service the water pump every couple seasons.

I don't think you could bend the forged crank with a stick of dynamite.

If you like the outboard, keep an eye on ebay for a replacement powerhead. Those things are pretty darn common. In the mean time, take yours apart to see what happened. At least pull the head to make sure you weren't sold an outboard with a bore full of rust.
A '60-70 Johnson or Evinrude 40hp powerhead will work, but the later ones you can run 50:1 in honestly. I see a 1970 one for $20 right now.

Don't waste your time with the repair shops. They will all tell you the motor is too old.
And don't think of it as an anchor either!

There are quite a few of us here who own these motors and can guide you through a full rebuild if need be.

It will be a good idea to pull the head off the motor and have look at the cylinder walls. If you can post a pic, or email one, that will give us some idea on how bad the damage is.

By the way, what fuel to oil ratio were you running in your motor when it seized? (be truthful ;) )

I took it to a shop today. I'll know by tomorrow whether it's serious or minor. If it's minor I plan on getting the manual for it so I can do proper maintenance on it in the future.

I'll post the nature of the problem tomorrow.

Oh, I was using 50:1 fuel / oil ratio.

I keeping reading it should be 24:1 but that 50:1 is good enough. I suppose too much oil would be better than not enough, right?

a bit late now, but yes. Your motor should have been run on 24:1.

50:1 on the pre 1963 engines is not enough oil.
