Grease forced out looks like wheel bearing grease

I was greasing the two fitting on the "turning" pivot (don't know what its called, not the one for the steering cable) and the grease that came out looked to be wheel bearing grease. Manual says to use Triple Guard. Should I just start using the T/G grease or try to flush out all the old grease with fresh T/G by pumping it in from grease gun?

I don't want to waste grease, so if the two are compatable for those bearings, I will just start using the T/G and not worry about what is in there now.

Sound OK?

Re: Grease forced out looks like wheel bearing grease

Hi Mark,

Swivel bracket? The one that the motor swings from side to side on?

It has pivot bushes top and bottom. One problem is that when these wear a little, pumping grease just forces it straight back out past the area of wear. One way of overcoming this is to shift the engine weight - like using a jack on the skeg to hold the weight - while greasing.

Must confess that I've used automotive grease for years, because that's what's in the gun, and it doesn't seem to have affected things any.The most important thing has gotta be to grease regularly, which keeps the water at bay.

I know a lot of boaters are particular about the grease they use, and I'm probably wrong to use just auto grease, but nothing has suffered for it. I pump it into my Bearing Buddies every trip, and the bearings are now several years old and look like new. I'm in salt all year round several times each week.

Stillfishing,

Yep that's the one - the swivel bracket. If its just a bushing, and not a ball or needle bearing, next time I grease it I'll use the Triple guard. Bushings generally don't hold much grease so it should just pass through.

I think your right about just keeping it greased. Axle grease is better than no grease!

Thanks
