I have an 18' aluminum flatbottom wide jon boat with a Johnson 175 with a jet on it. I can only get between 5000 & 5100 RPM's. I was wondering if there is a way to reach the 5500 mark?
I don't know if there is some type of limiter on the engine?
Thanks for any advice.

Bkeence

Yes there is a rev limiter built into the Powerpack. I can't remember the exact max revs - I think it's either 6000rpm or 6500rpm. In any event your well under that.

Re: 2005 Bombidier 175

Yes Seasport I read a lot of other posts on the problem. I never did find an exact solution. However I did check to make sure that the motor is the right height. According to the specs the forward edge of the jet when trimmed down should be exactly level with the bottom of the boat. That puts the tail end about 2" lower.
I also read that if the impeller is worn it would actually make the RPM's higher most likely. The boat runs about 41 MPH downstream on a small river (via GPS). The dealer said it should run 45 MPH at a minimum.
I am going to try reading more and checking other things out. If all elsse fails I will take it to the dealer that set it up.

Thanks,

Brian

Bkeence,
Does it have the OIS 2000 electronic system? Also...if your motor is a 2005... isn't still under factory warranty?

Jets are an unknown quantity down here. Never seen one. Excuse the ignorance, but just why do you need to use jet drives?

The impeller size in your jet unit is what limits the rpm of the motor. A different impeller will give you a different rpm at full throttle.

Re: 2005 Bombidier 175

Jquest: I will have to check on the electronic system & yes it is an 05 and still under warranty. I was just hoping to figure it out.

Seasport: Jetdrives replace the lower unit and are basically a high powered water pump. The water pressure propells the boat. I live a the Meramec river in Missouri. There are rapids where the water is only 3" or 4" deep and I can run right up them without touching bottom with the jet. I can also run the bigger rivers such as the Missouri river or the Mississippi river. There is a bit of information at http://www.outboardjets.com .

Muskrat: I did check the height of the motor. With the trim all the way down, the leading edge of the jet should be, and is flush with the bottom of the boat. So I believe the height is correct. I did learn that I may need to "Sharpen" the impeller. I downloaded a diagram for this task, it is done with a flat file, then I re-shim the impeller to 1/32" clearance.

Thanks everyone, I'm still figuring this out, if all else fails I will return it to the dealer.

Brian

Re: 2005 Bombidier 175

Thanks Brian. There are heaps of jet boats here but they all use inboard motors & jet units. I haven't seen an outboard jet unit. Maybe this is because the so-called Hamilton jet was invented in NZ.

Good luck in resolving your problem.

Jquest: Yes it does have the OIS 2000 system.
Is that good or bad?

Thanks.

I plan on hitting the dealer tomorrow evening if I can get home from work in time. The dealer is about an hour away.

Brian
