Trying to find out for sure what year motor I have, I think its a 1992. The model number is J140TLANS. I have double-checked it, but according to the charts I have seen, the "A" is not on there. Can someone tell me about this number.

Thanks.

In my parts books, J140TLANS is indeed a 1992 140hp Johnson. However, there is nothing I could tell you about the number.

Re: My Model number doesn't exist on OMC Chart

Thank you for your reply. Can I ask you another question? I see that you have 30+ yrs with OMC, so maybe you can help.

First, I have owned this boat and motor for about 3 years. This motor has always run like a dream & starts like a dream. Never had an ounce of problems with it. I bought a Garmin 188C GPS/DepthSounder combo. I had it "professionally" installed. Ever since then, the motor has a bad miss in it when you give it gas to get on a plane and once on a plane, it misses bad, especially at 4600 RPMs, which is where I like to run it. If you go slower or faster, it "SEEMS" to smooth out some, but still has a little miss. Tried running the boat without the GPS/DepthSounder even being plugged in and the miss is almost all but gone, only has a slight miss at 4600RPMS but no miss, at least that i can tell at any other time. But again, it never had a miss at all before the installation of the GPS/Sounder unit. It almost seems like to me that there is some small problem with the ignition system, but when the GPS is on, the problem is severly aggravated. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!

The "A" replaces the "E" and stands for "alternate color". I'd bet its the charcoal or charcoal metalic color. There was only a year or so that happened.

I've never run into the problem you describe but there have been a couple of posts here about the same problem. It was always related to the installed units if I rember correctly.

I suspect you're getting some RFI interference that's causing a problem in the powerpack. That may sound wierd, but that would be the logical answer.

It does happen.

It happens more than folks think. What plugs are you using? Are the plug wires stock?

Champion QL78YC gapped at .030

The spark plug wires are stock, at least they look like it. Just bought a new set of replacement OMC wires that I will put on this weekend.

AS far as it happening more than folks think, I am inclined to believe that, however, I have talked to numerous shops and Garmin themselves, and nobody has a clue. I can't believe none of these places havent seen and corrected a problem such as this, but I am having no luck.

Thanks

Good choice on plugs. If it didnt do this before the installation of the electronic units, have you tried unhooking the unit at the battery and running the motor?

Thanks for the reply. The unit is not hooked up at the battery. its hooked into a fuse panel under the dash.

Exactly. Unhook it so no power is going thru any wire that was just installed. Then run the motor.
